People who run a home based business are at somewhat of a disadvantage to people who operate a regular retail business. The home based business person does not have a fancy sign and eye catching store front on a busy street. There won’t be any customers walking or driving by to see that you are open for business. So how is a tiny home base operation supposed to get enough exposure to generate a decent amount of business for itself?
You can accomplish this by creating a really professional website. When it comes to the internet, a one person business being run from home can actually compete on a level footing with a much larger company. People are going to judge your business by your website. They aren’t going to judge you in person. That won’t happen until you actually get them to call you.
This presents a real opportunity for you. This really could decide whether your home based business succeeds or fails. It is not that you absolutely have to compete with a much larger company. It could be that there are no big companies that do what you do for your customers. The benefit of the website is that if properly structured, it will generate business for you that you would otherwise have a hard time getting.
One of the biggest challenges you are going to face in your home based business is finding new customers to sell your products and services to. Your ability to consistently generate new business can make or break you. Every successful business whether a retail store or a service business has to have a system for generating new business. Some of them use display advertising in newspapers and other local periodicals. Some of them use Yellow Pages advertising. Some of them use radio or television advertising. Some of them may employ outside sales reps who bring in leads one at a time. All of them have some kind of system though. If they don’t have a system in place, then they will struggle to get new business.
Most one person businesses run out of a home don’t have the kind of resources it takes to buy a top advertising placement in the Yellow Pages. Most of them cannot afford to run radio, television or even print advertising on a regular basis. Almost all of them could afford a decent website though. You can’t just have a website though. You have got to promote that website. That website has to show up in places where people are looking for someone who does what you do. If your website doesn’t show up when someone searches online, then you aren’t going to earn their business.
Getting your business to show up on the internet is a little more involved than you might realize at first. For starters, most people aren’t going to be searching for your business name. Customers that have never heard of you are certainly not going to know the name of your business. Most people search according to their need. When they need a local plumber, they will just search for the word plumber. Maybe they will search for the word plumber along with the name of your local city, suburb, county or town. The point is that they will search for their need and not for a specific business name. If they are searching for a specific business name then they already know who they are going to do business with.
So, keep this advice in mind when you are trying to build your home based business. Make sure you have a half way decent website. Make sure that people can find it when they are searching for the kinds of things they need done. This process could ultimately determine whether your home based business succeeds or fails.
